Fall Creek/White River Tunnel System

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Owner: Indianapolis Department of Public Works
Services Provided: Environmental

This project is one of the largest ever undertaken on the wastewater collection system by the City of Indianapolis. As part of their CSO Long-Term Control Plan, Indianapolis has decided to construct tunnels to collect and store combined sewage from their CSOs. This tunnel will be approximately 18 feet in diameter and run seven miles along White River and Fall Creek at a depth of 250 feet. This places the tunnel in bedrock and reduces construction cost. Additional components of the project include diversion structures, consolidation sewers, drop shafts, and connection tunnels. Indianapolis is also pushing for greener infrastructure and has included a large green infrastructure design component for this project. The design requires significant evaluation of hydraulics, soils, groundwater, environmental resources, and transportation. American Structurepoint is responsible for designing consolidation sewers for the project, conducting environmental site assessments, and evaluating transportation impacts. We are also responsible for evaluating and designing green infrastructure for areas where construction will impact the surface.
