Aqua Indiana owns and operates a 1.55-MGD (currently being expanded to 2.45-MGD) wastewater treatment plant for the Hendricks County Regional Sewer District. During 2008, the treatment plant had several episodes of significant foaming in the extended aeration tanks. As a result of the foaming issue, American Structurepoint evaluated the overall operation of the treatment plant, including determining the cause of the foaming and proposing improvements to overall plant operations. During the project, American Structurepoint made several site visits to analyze the plant operation and discuss how the plant is operated with the plant operators. Aqua Indiana also provided American Structurepoint with almost a year and a half of MRO data to perform process calculations such as food to mass ratio, HRT, SRT, sludge age, and other appropriate parameters to determine if anything appeared unusual. American Structurepoint analyzed the MRO data specifically for parameters that may indicate the cause of the strong Nocardia growth and production found in the extended aeration tanks.
